Progression: you must refer to what you will do next to improve on either the shoot you have done or how you will develop your project in the next shoot.

Plans For Shoot

For this shoot, I plan to experiment with elements such as line and tone surrounding the idea of windows as well as my photographers research, by doing this I will be able to capture a new perspective to this topic and be able to continue to experiment with different tone and shape concepts.

This above collection of photographs(/pictures/paintings by other artists/photographers) represent some of tyne images that I felt I could capture within Harlow. They represent a variety of lines, most of the images are quite abstract closely cropped) and shot in black and white (I decided that I would adopt a similar approach for my work).

 (AO1:  You must ensure that several of the visual ideas/inspirations within the image bank are pursued)

My idea for recording tone in my independence shoot was to photograph my classmates using motion elements as well as form and portraiture elements this way i could explore different ways tone is presented within those other elements such as the shadows and exposed curve elements shown within  the images. I was inspired from my research of Runar Eilertsen images which highlights the use of form, tone and composition in his work. His use of movement gave me an idea to photograph peoples different expressions and their movements. The images came out as I expected, however I had to pay particular attention to getting the stutter speed settings correct for each of the images (movement and stand still images).

The first image was of a building in Harlow I took this image because it allowed a lot of windows to be seen which links to the main topic idea but I also took this image at this angle so that i could gain a perspective element in the photo and so in this way the image would link back to the artist own work.

Overall;

I believe these images turned out alright however I may come back at a later date to improve them further so that I can allow the images to be at a better quality then what they are now, for my best images I plan on turning the photos into black and white using Photoshop so that all the images will highlight elements of tone and therefore represent key elements the artist had used in there own work creating a visual link between the two.

(AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops)

The images were photographed at an aperture range of between f4 and f8. I think moving on I will try to increase the aperture setting to as high as possible so that I might have sharper pictures with a wider depth of field, which hopefully will be beneficial due to using artificial lighting. During this photo-shoot I was able to experiment with my ISO settings. For some of the images I used a  shutter speed around 1/15 s with an f stop of 7.1 but this changed sometimes during the photo-soot as I wanted to see what worked better with each image so therefore the camera settings were not consistent during the shoot. Some of the images are slightly out of focus.

If I were to reshoot these images again I would try to use a tripod to hold the camera steady and use a camera with a higher f stop range so that I could make sure the image was sharper. To improve my images I decided to import some of them into Photoshop and use this to create black and white images with more contrast between the main subject and the background. (this is shown below)

The screen grabs selected show how Photoshop was used to create a high contrast black and white image.  To do use this, I used the Curves tool and the Black and White tool adjusting the colour sliders to get the desired hard contrast effect.

(AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding).

(Here you will discuss how you developed your work based on your research of e.g. artists/photographers, etc).

The artist research was helpful as I realised that the theory on line meant that I could tackle the subject from a range of perspectives.  My research of Walker Evans helped me to focus on the hard geometric shapes of modern cities.  This was helpful to me as the college is located in Harlow where many of the buildings gave me opportunities to photograph geometric shapes.  The research on line and emotion/mood was not particularly helpful to this study, however some of the shots were composed using leading lines where the perspective of the buildings draws the viewer into the composition... this aspect of research was useful.

(It is important that you show a progression of your work… which may mean revisiting a subject area and adding additional images showing a development of your ideas or refinement of the final images through).

(AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements).

I believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of line, composition and the images of Walker Evans...  The final images produced were refined by developing the contrast and converting them into black and white images..
